Our clients, who traveled many years, asked us to do a total makeover on their home. They were moving in after 17 years of renters and wanted everything redone. The entry, they requested, should follow a Chinese plan of screening the front door from the street. Together, we fashioned a curved walkway that features a pair of Mexican redbuds to shelter the home. We widened the driveway and simplified the front lawn by adding an extended CA native garden.
In the backyard, they requested a Zen-style retreat with a pergola, a hidden utility shed, a meditation corner, and two water features. We went back and forth many times on the plant selection and landed on a mix of Japanese-influenced and CA native plants to surround the quiet space. At the end of the day, we were all satisfied with the outcome.
