This California native garden, designed and installed on the slope behind a Craftsman-style remodeled home, is intended to bridge the gap between the man-made and the natural world of open space beyond the fence. To create the visual transition from the stone wall at the lawn to deer fence, we filled the slope with a mosaic planting of California natives, complete with meandering paths (similar to “game trails”). Toyons, manzanitas, coffeeberries, irises, swordferns and more are planted with gopher wire baskets and woven into the landscape with moss rock boulders, which protect the root systems as the plants get established.
