Landscape Design Process

LANDSCAPE DESIGN PROCESS

Start with clarity

The decisions that shape a landscape’s livability and property value should happen before anything is built.

Some homeowners come to us with a full wish list. Others just know the space is not working. Some are already trying to sort through contractor opinions, pricing, and a mix of ideas.

Our process is designed to bring order to that early — so everyone is working from the same plan.

Because we work closely with contractors, tradespeople, and local vendors, we design for how your landscape will be built.

A site visit and real conversation

Every project starts on site.

We walk your property with you, talk through what is and is not working, and learn what you want.  We consider where to gather, swim, cook, garden, create privacy, or simply enjoy being outside.

And importantly, we are reading the property itself. We look at access, grade, circulation, thresholds, sunlight, and views.

You do not need to have everything figured out before we meet. The first step is about creating direction.

Sort out the important decisions early

Most landscape problems do not start with choosing the wrong paver.

Problems show up when the bigger decisions are not worked out first. Projects that kick off without a full plan end up with unintended consequences like areas that are crowded or overlapping, infrastructure that collapses, and big chunks of budget blown on components that could have been streamlined.

Good design is about hierarchy.  Layout comes first, organized around the main structures and how the space connects to the house. Things that are “extras” — like seating walls or elaborate kitchens — are held as placeholders until all decisions make sense together.

Sometimes a surprisingly small shift makes a big difference. Moving a fence forward, relocating a shade structure, removing a deck, or creating a quiet retreat patio in a tucked-away corner can completely change how the space works.

Those are the aha moments that make design fun.

Develop the design — in stages

We do not try to solve everything at once.

We start with the big moves first — the main activity areas, layout, and circulation. That means structures, pools, kitchens, shade, patios, and the paths that connect everything together.

Then we refine the next layer of decisions. Materials, asset choices, planting, and lighting all start to make more sense once the framework is clearly visible.

You see the design as it takes shape

As we test the layout, we show it to you in 3D at designated checkpoints.  We want your feedback on spacing, proportions, and flow before details are locked in.

This is the most interactive part of the process. Sometimes the right direction is obvious. Other times, we have to test a few ideas for the arrangement to click.

Many homeowners are surprised and excited about how much they learn about their property during the design process. That makes the installation more intuitive and easier to manage.

Design and planning

Within the design process, we help you plan for installation.

We set up field trips, guide material choices, and help you compare options for structures, kitchens, fire features, and other key assets.

We design planting and lighting. That means shaping California-appropriate plant palettes and laying out a lighting program that balances function and ambiance.

Importantly, all decisions are captured and carried forward into the final documentation.  That helps contractors and installers get the big picture — quickly.

The real value is in how the plan becomes buildable

The result is a clear design set installers can accurately cost and build from.

We organize your landscape plan into your SpecBook — bringing together scope, visuals, materials, planting, and reference information so you and your installer can move into construction with confidence and clarity.

How most homeowners use the design

Some homeowners move directly into construction with their preferred installer.  If desired, we can recommend installers who have the skills your project will need.

Others use the design set to compare bids, phase work over time, or coordinate landscape work with home renovations.

What matters is that major decisions are considered and worked out before demolition and installation.
