These clients were very enthusiastic about designing a wonderful surround for their traditional Lamorinda home. We pulled out the old driveway and entry, which allowed us to rethink the footprint to reach the front door. We expanded the garden areas in the entry. The fenced front entry was already in place, so we did have limitations on our space planning. However, we looked at it as a guide rather than a hindrance. We established a peaceful front garden, akin to a California native Zen garden, for bird watching, meditation, and environmental enjoyment. We played with redbuds, coffeeberries, and ceanothus. We even added the adventure of bringing in a trellis set to espalier a pair Ray Hartman ceanothuses.
The homeowners are pumped to watch the birds by day and the stars by night.
